Mechanism of action
The mechanism of action of abilify is yet not explained properly but it has been observed that aripiprazole is different from other anti-psychotic drugs and it is also the only selected drug that is approved anti-psychotic that decreases dopaminergic neurotransmission through D2 partial agonism. It binds to the D2 receptor which has the same affinity as dopamine therefore when it binds to the D2, over activity of the mesolimbic pathway may initiate the positive feeling in the brain. Aripiprazole can also reduce the mesolimbic activity which in turn decreases the positive symptoms in the brain.
