Celexa

Celexa is an antidepressant that is widely used to treat depression. Depression has been around since the start of mankind. According to the Bible, Job and King David suffered with depression. For hundreds of years many famous works of literature have featured characters with this disorder.

depressionDuring the 19th Century, people who suffered with depression were considered to have a weak character. Fortunately, today science has proved that depression is a medical illness that is caused by an imbalance of neurotransmitters (chemicals) in our brains. The chemical that promotes feelings of joy and happiness is called serotonin.

When the brain is not producing enough serotonin, depression can occur. Depression is characterized by negative thought patterns, behavior and moods. It can cause a feeling of continual sadness and even affect us physically, and cause sleep and eating disorders. Drugs like Celexa can re-balance the correct levels of serotonin.

Depression is one of the most common illnesses in the world. It is said that 10 percent of all adults, 8 percent of adolescents and 2 percent of pre-puberty children suffer with some level of depression.

If you suspect that you are depressed, you will need to consult a doctor. The doctor will ask you certain questions before diagnosing this disorder. If you have been feeling emotionally sad for longer than 2 weeks, or if you are battling to function at home, work or school, you could well be depressed. Depression can affect your relationship with friends and family.

Celexa belongs to a genre of drugs called SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). Doctors often prefer prescribing SSRI antidepressants because they have fewer side effects. If your doctor puts you on a course of Celexa, you should soon be able to be a happier person and enjoy life a lot more.

Remember however that you might only feel better after 4 weeks because it may take a while for Celexa to start working to its full potential.
